George Boulton and Ben So’oialo Chan in Cinderford link-up

National One new boys Cinderford have made their first two signings ahead of the 2018/19 season.
The champagne corks may only just have finished popping in the heart of the Forest of Dean after the club’s hugely impressive National Two South title success, but already they are looking ahead to the new campaign.
Three-quarter George Boulton and second row Ben So’oialo Chan will be reporting for pre-season training at Cinderford on Tuesday 3rd July having agreed to join the club from near neighbours Hartpury.
“They’re both good players,” said director of rugby Paul Morris, “and they both featured in Hartpury’s Championship team last season.”
Boulton, 24, played more first-team games than So’oialo Chan, who is a player Morris knows from his time as coach at Gloucestershire.
“I put him in the side for a must-win game against Hertfordshire in 2012,” said Morris. “He was only 18 and we needed to win to avoid being relegated, which we did. He also played in my last game at Gloucestershire.
“He’s got intensity and desire and is very good defensively. He’s a good player.”
Boulton featured mainly on the wing when given a chance in Hartpury’s Championship side but will be competing for a place in the centre – his favoured position – when he joins Cinderford.
So’oialo Chan, meanwhile, is an out and out second row and that is one of the things about him that appeals to Morris.
“We played back row players in the second row at times last season – very successfully – but Ben is an out and out second row,” explained Morris. “We’re losing Roger Birkin who is moving to Dubai and signing Ben will keep everyone on their toes, it will increase competition.
“He’ll be good for us and if we can keep him fit he’s a very good player.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
