Two of Gloucester’s greatest ever players will be in Bilbao supporting the Cherry and Whites tonight.

Peter Ford and Mickey Booth, who between them played close on 1,000 first-team games for the club in the 50s, 60s and 70s, headed off to sunny Spain earlier this week ahead of the club’s European Challenge Cup final against Cardiff Blues (8pm).

Ford and Booth are life members at Gloucester and watch the club play as often as they can.

“Good luck to the boys,” said Booth, a scrum-half back in the day. “Let’s hope they bring the trophy back, that would be nice.”

Gloucester and Cardiff have enjoyed a strong rivalry that stretches back over many decades.

Booth and Ford, an outstanding back row, were involved in a good number of those games and Booth added with a chuckle: “In our day it would take you an hour and half to get to the Arms Park to play Cardiff.

“Now you have to go all the way to Bilbao to play them!

“Mind you, it’s terrific for the players today.”
