As any budding mathematician will tell you, five into three doesn’t go, but that’s not concerning Andy Payne as he looks ahead to the North Gloucestershire Combination Cup finals day at Kingsholm on Sunday.

That’s because the Combination’s treasurer/secretary/press officer – “They call me Mr Combination,” he chuckled – is delighted that there are five clubs competing in this year’s three finals.

Only Coney Hill have two teams through to the big day and the other clubs represented are Old Centralians, Gordon League, Spartans and Chosen Hill Former Pupils.

Old Centralians and Coney Hill square up in the showpiece game – the Senior Cup final – at 5pm in a repeat of last year’s final which Cents won.

Coney Hill will hope to have the Junior Cup in their back pockets by the time that game kicks off because the junior final - they play Gordon League - starts at 2pm, while the Glanville Cup final will be contested by Spartans and Chosen Hill (11am).

“It’s great that local rugby is being represented by so many clubs,” said Payne. “It’s still massive for club players in Gloucester to play at Kingsholm, a place they learned all about when they were growing up.”

And Payne is hoping that the matches do justice to the occasion – and certainly the signs are good.

“Coney Hill are looking for revenge in the Senior Cup,” said Payne. “They are massively up for it. They’ve won their league and they want the cup back, they’re very passionate about the cup.

“There’s quite a bit of rivalry between the two clubs, because they’ll be playing at the same level next season after Coney Hill’s promotion, and Cents will want to prove that they are the best team in Gloucester.”

The Junior Cup final is equally mouthwatering, not least because Gordon League are returning to Kingsholm after a lengthy absence.

“They have been around for a long time but it’s a long time since they played in a final,” said Payne, who is looking forward to Gordon League’s all white strip with a red sash gracing Kingsholm again.

“But they played really well against Matson in the semi-final when they won 7-5.”

They know they’ll need to produce another performance like that if they are to beat Coney Hill while  Spartans are hoping to go one better than last season when they take on Chosen Hill in the Glanville Cup.

Spartans were beaten by Matson in last season’s final and it won’t be easy for the 2007/08 winners against Chosen Hill.
