Old Centralians grab North Gloucestershire Combination Senior Cup glory with win over Coney Hill at Kingsholm

Old Centralians won the North Gloucestershire Combination Senior Cup for the fourth time in seven years at Kingsholm yesterday, but perhaps significantly, their 26-15 win over Coney Hill was the first time that they have enjoyed back-to-back wins in the competition.
They have a long way to go to match the records of the likes of Matson and Coney Hill in the Senior Cup, of course, but supporters of the South West One East club will certainly be hoping that there are many more victories to come at the home of Gloucester over the next few seasons.
Even then they will have to go some to match the achievement of Coney Hill who won the trophy for a remarkable 10 seasons in a row from 2001/02.
Coney Hill’s last win in the competition came in 2012/13 and although they were very much in the contest throughout the 80 minutes yesterday, at no stage did the Western Counties North champions ever manage to get their noses in front.
Cents came out of the blocks fast and after impressive centre Shay Morgan had made an early break their pressure was rewarded with a try for full-back Lewis May in the corner.
Coney Hill cut the deficit to two points when Tom Davis slotted a penalty but it was back up to five when Wayne Mulhern also kicked a penalty.
A second penalty for Cents, this time converted by Morgan, stretched the advantage, and they went further ahead when wing George Bvuma scored their second try. Morgan added the extras.
ASt 18-3 it wasn’t looking good for Coney Hill but the club, who will be competing at the same level as Cents next season, showed they are made of stern stuff by getting their first try just before the break when scrum-half Oli Wem darted over after a quickly taken penalty.
The second period was punctuated by a good number of stoppages due to injuries but in the closing stages Cents cemented their advantage.
Mulhern converted a penalty before no 8 Tom Wilcox picked up and dived over for a try from close range after a dominant Cents scrum.
There was still time for Coney Hill to get a converted try of their own – scored by Joe Franklin – but by then the cup was already heading back to Old Centralians.
Gordon League 2nds, meanwhile, ended a 15-year wait for a Combination cup final win by defeating Coney Hill 2nds 26-12 in the Junior Cup.
And in The Glanville Cup, Chosen Hill won their first ever North Gloucestershire Combination cup final when their 3rds defeated Spartans 3rds 35-22.Other Images
