George Porter will lead Cinderford out at Bury St Edmunds on Saturday knowing that victory will see them return to National One after a break of two years.

In fact, the Forest of Dean club only need three more points to be absolutely certain that a quite remarkable season ends on the highest of highs.

They head for the historic market town of Suffolk having won 27 of their 28 games – a record that has left Chinnor as their only serious rivals for much of the season.

Even Chinnor – the only team to have beaten them this season – have struggled to keep up with Cinderford’s relentless pace and the Oxfordshire club know that even if they win at Canterbury on Saturday they will almost certainly have missed out on the title come 5pm.

Not that Cinderford or George Porter think the job is done just yet.

“Yes, we’re nearly there,” the skipper said, “but we’re not under-estimating Bury St Edmunds.

“They are a good side and nearly beat Chinnor at the weekend.”

And Porter, who confirmed that he would like to continue as captain next season, isn’t concerned if Cinderford win the title some 190-plus miles from home.

While it would obviously have been nice to have clinched the championship in front of their Dockham Road faithful, Porter said: “It is what it is, we just want to win it.”

No arguments with that, of course, and if they do make it 15 wins out of 15 on the road on Saturday, it’s sure to be some party when they play their final game of the season at home to Canterbury a week on Saturday.
