Brockworth Rugby Club are a true family club and if you don’t believe it just ask club chairman Steve Dunn.

Dunn has spent much of his life in and around the Gloucester One club both as a player and as an official.

Both his sons – Liam and James – play for the club with James, who is currently travelling round the world, a former captain just like his dad.

“It’s going well,” said Dunn senior when asked about the state of the club. “We’ve had some hard times but life is quite good at the moment.

“We’re a family-orientated club and a lot of our current players have come from families who previously played for the club.”

And a good number of those former players are still involved with the club today.

“We’ve got junior teams at under-6, 7, 8 and 9,” added Dunn, “and the great thing is that the people running those age groups are the dads who we brought through 15 years or more ago.

“They are now helping to run the minis and juniors section – people like Craig Brindley and John Newton who is an ex-club captain.

“We’ve had up to 100 toddlers turn out and it can take some organising!”

The youth section is self-contained within the club – it has its own committee – and the hope is to run more age group teams in the years to come.

“The main thing is to get up to under-17s and then let them step into senior rugby,” said Dunn.

Formed in the mid-1970s, Brockworth are one of the younger clubs in the North Gloucestershire Combination, and they’ve certainly got a relatively young squad competing for places in their 1st and 2nd XVs.

“We are quite a young squad,” said Dunn. “Our captain Sam Burford is one of our more senior players. It’s his first season in the job and he’s doing very well. We’ve got a great team spirit.

“And we’re really pleased that Dave Pointon is our coach. It’s his fourth season with us and he’s very experienced.”

Brockworth went close to promotion last season and that is again the aim this time around.

“It will be tough but we do want promotion,” said Dunn. “I don’t think one more level is too much although after that the travelling gets a lot. I think Gloucester Premier is a good level for us.”

Dunn senior was a hooker in yesteryear, starting and finishing his career with Brockworth either side of a spell with Gordon League, who were a good team in those days.

Since hanging up his boots he has spent much of his time on Brockworth’s committee.

“I’ve held nearly all the positions,” he chuckled. “I’ve been chairman, president, treasurer. The only position I haven’t held is secretary.”

He’s in his third season as chairman and it’s his second time around as well after previously holding the post for a long period. With people like him around Brockworth’s future looks bright indeed.
