Cheltenham Veterans take on Cheltenham Civil Service Veterans in charity match at The Newlands

Cheltenham Rugby Club will come together as one tomorrow for a special charity match at The Newlands.

It’s a game between Cheltenham Veterans and Cheltenham Civil Service Veterans and will raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Former Cheltenham player Mike Crisp was diagnosed with the disease in October last year.
The one-time fly-half will be at The Newlands to see the veterans of both teams roll back the years.

He will have played with or against many, if not all, of the players on show and will have particularly fond memories of his time playing alongside the likes of Leroy Hughes, John Wood and Matt Mudway.

All three are set to play tomorrow and Hughes will captain the Cheltenham team.
The game kicks off at 12.30pm and is the start of a very busy day for the club, because the charity match will be followed by the 1st XV’s Western Counties North clash against Midsomer Norton.

Eleventh-placed Cheltenham are seven places below Midsomer Norton in the 14-strong division but only six points separate the two teams. Cheltenham have so far won two and lost three of their league games this season.

That game will be followed by a Ladies’ Championship South fixture when Thurrock are the visitors.

Cheltenham stalwart John Woodward said: “I’m hoping we’ll get a crowd of 150 to 200 tomorrow.”
