Wayne Barnes will be the man in the middle when Gloucester take on Worcester Warriors at Kingsholm on Friday (7.45pm).

The Bream-born referee will be taking charge of his 188th Premiership game and at the age of just 38 he has plenty of time to add to that number.

The match itself is an important one for both teams.

Gloucester, after their uplifting opening-day win against champions Exeter, have suffered back-to-back defeats on the road against Harlequins and Leicester, while Worcester go into the game still looking for their first win of the campaign.

Indeed, they have yet to claim even a bonus point this season. Not surprisingly they are bottom of the table, two places and five points below Gloucester.

The Gloucester faithful who will flock to Kingsolm in their numbers on Friday will be hoping for a repeat of their side’s performance against the Warriors in January this year when they raced to a 55-19 win.

The last three encounters between the two clubs have been evenly split with a win apiece plus a draw, while Worcester’s only previous victory at Kingsholm was 13-6 in April 2009.

Warriors have lost their last five Premiership matches since beating Bath 25-19 at Sixways in April and have not won away from home in the league since a visit to Harlequins in March 2016.

Meanwhile, the latest OPTA Rugby Rankings for the Premiership show that Gloucester back row Lewis Ludlow is leading the tackle count chart this season with 59.

And former Sir Thomas Rich’s pupil Sam Underhill, who made his debut for Bath last week, made more tackles – 22 – than any other player in round three of the Premiership.
