Old Patesians banking on their captain marvels

‘If it ain’t broke it doesn’t need fixing’ is the message coming out of Old Patesians as they look ahead to the new rugby season.
The ambitious South West One East club have revealed that last year’s player leadership group will continue into 2017/18 with the club looking to improve on last season’s third-placed finish and clinch promotion.
It means that prop Connor Thompson will continue as club captain, hooker Chris Dean as 1st XV captain with back row George Angell his second-in-command.
The club have also revealed that utility forward Jonathan Bullock will continue as 3rd XV skipper.
‘The leadership group worked well last year with everyone making massive contributions to the club,” said Thompson.
“I take a whole club perspective, being the link between all three senior teams to the coaching staff and committee.
“Chris and George take the captaincy on the pitch for the 1st XV. They make the decisions and drive the standards at training and at matches.
“Both led the team really well last year, leading from the front. They are players you want in your team with fantastic attitudes.
“Jonathan is a fantastic clubman, who is an unsung hero. Not only is he captain of the 3rd XV, he is coach and selector. He drums up a strong 3rd XV and helps the coaching team by pushing players for the 2nd XV as well.
“We haven’t gone down the route of formally announcing a 2nd XV captain as we don’t want to effectively say to someone, ‘You’ll be with the 2nds every week’.
“We want to create a squad where all are pushing for the 1st XV. It tends to be done on a weekly selection basis.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
