Simon Lane has joined Old Centralians as a backs coach and head coach Jack Preece says it’s the best signing the club has made this summer.

The former Plymouth Albion, Gloucester Academy and Worcester Academy coach has already made a big impact at the South West One East club and Preece is excited to be working with him again.

They worked together “four or five years ago” and Preece has happy memories of that season.

“The 1st and 2nd XVs both won their leagues and we had three teams at Kingsholm for the Combination Cup finals and we won two of them,” said Preece.

“He’s very knowledgeable about the game. We needed someone to replace Ben Slatter who is taking a break and Simon is the club’s best signing of the summer.

“He’s got a good coaching brain and if things are going wrong on the pitch he is able to come up with a plan to turn things around. He’s like a 16th man.”

Professional rugby player Preece will rely heavily on Lane’s input because his playing commitments with National One club Coventry mean the amount of time he can spend with Cents will be restricted.

“I will coach the players on Mondays,” he said, “and we’ll both be at training on Wednesdays and then Simon will be in charge on Saturdays.

“I think it will be a good balance. He’ll look after the backs and we’ve got some really good youngsters coming through. He’ll be perfect for them.”

Preece, 28 on 1st August, has been coaching for the past decade and has known Lane for a long time.

“He used to coach me when I was with Dursley Colts,” said Preece. “He’s very good. The big ambition is to go up this season.”
