Andy Deacon has got some familiar faces around him now that pre-season training has started at Cirencester Rugby Club with the coaching set-up remaining firmly intact.
Matt Carter is continuing as head coach and Dan Morris remains as the backs coach.
The trio have been together for the past two years since Deacon took over as director of rugby at the club, which will play in Gloucester Premier in 2017/18.
Rob Clyne is the defence coach while Dave Shrimpton will coach the 2nds.
Alisdair Wood is the first team manager while Martin Woodward and Andy Ramsey will continue to coach the Colts. Charlie Berry moves to lead physio this year having spent last year assisting Adam Gaunt, who is now full time at Hartpury.
Pre-season training has recently kicked off at the Whiteway with an impressive 56 players, new and old, running out on the Paddock.
The Colts also train with the seniors, as introduced last year, which paid dividends and has created a successful pathway for young players moving to senior rugby.
“Discussions with the guys and also a few potential new signings is healthy at this stage in pre-season which is encouraging,” Deacon said.
“We also have a good number of talented Colts who are now eligible and putting their hands up.”
Deacon has been delighted with the early-season turnout at the club following last term’s relegation from Western Counties North.
“It was a strong start in terms of numbers with half-a-dozen new faces and a few guys returning back to the sport as well,” he said.
“I think 50-plus is probably a record attendance to the start of any season and I was pleased. We just need to keep the momentum going.
“Many of the guys have been doing personal fitness sessions with Evolution in the off time, and we are continuing this hard work and effort, with drills and skills.
“The clubhouse and grounds are also in very good shape following the recent NatWest work party efforts and further work to the changing rooms continues this summer.
“The mood is positive and upbeat and the desire from the coaches and management is to provide excellent facilities and a training programme that motivates the squad and gets us fitter, stronger and better equipped to get back to winning ways.”
The club are also focusing on the ladies’ and girls’ game this season.
“Look for out for some exciting news with regard to our 'Grow Women’s Rugby' campaign with training and tournament details,” said Deacon.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
