Matson Rugby Club under-15s are County Cup champions

Matson’s under-15s staged a grandstand finish to claim the County Cup with a 17-14 win over Old Patesians at Hartpury.
It was a special moment for coach Stuart Locke, who had already won the County Cup at under-15, 16 and 17 level with Matson before retiring from coaching 12 years ago.
Locke, who is the main man for the whole junior set-up at Matson, took charge of the current team, which includes his son Joshua at fly-half, at under-9 level. They reached the final of the under-11 County Cup four years ago but went one better this time around.
However, they were made to work very hard for their victory by brave opponents. Pats had gone into half-time with a 7-0 advantage courtesy of a Jarred Nuttall try, converted by Henry Tarrant, but Matson cut the deficit early in the second half when hooker Jay Vallender touched down following a catch and drive.
A penalty try awarded against Pats for collapsing a driving maul, put Matson ahead for the first time and Locke junior’s conversion stretched the advantage.
Back came Pats with a second try through Luca Massafra-Mason, which was converted by Tarrant, but they were hampered by having a player in the sin bin and Matson took the spoils when no. 8 Seamus O’Connor went over for their third try.
Locke senior said: “I’m very proud of them. It’s been a long hard season and they deserved something like this. Fair play to Pats, they tackled their hearts out.”Other Images
