A new racing club are hoping to celebrate their first winner in the next few weeks.

Turf Wars Racing Club has been set up by Barry Preece and Kelly Amor and has already had a couple of runners, with many more expected over the coming weeks and months.

Preece is well-known in and around Cheltenham as a racehorse owner.

The one-time Chosen Hill School pupil has been living the racing dream for a good many years and he’s someone who knows what it’s like to have a winner at Cheltenham and Aintree, and to have a runner at the Cheltenham Festival.

Those memories will live with him, his family and friends forever, of course. They are special days and his dream is to give more people the opportunity to enjoy all the thrills that racing can offer.

And that’s where Turf Wars Racing Club comes in, a club that allows racing fans to be part of a horse’s life without having to pay the training fees, veterinary fees and all the travelling costs.

“We want to get more people involved in horseracing,” explained Amor, a former stable lass with Flat trainer Gay Kelleway. “We want people to have a real vested interest in a horse without having the burden of the fees.”

For a one-off payment of £800, paid annually, prospective members will enjoy the same benefits as some of the biggest owners in the sport.

“They’ll have free entry to the racecourse,  they’ll be  inside the paddock before the race and they’ll be in the winner’s enclosure if their horse wins,” said Amor. “They will also receive two per cent of any prizemoney.”

And if after 12 months you want to step away, that’s not a problem at all.

Away from the course Turf Wars Racing Club will offer stable tours as well as regular updates from the yard on how the horse is getting along back at home.

Home for Turf Wars Racing Club is James Evans’ stable at Kinnersley, just over the border in Worcestershire.

It is in partnership with Evans that Preece has enjoyed his greatest moments on the track with Trackmate and more recently Risk And Roll.

Risk And Roll, who has won six times under Rules and enjoyed a top 10 finish in the Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, is one of six horses being trained by Evans for Turf Wars Racing Club.

Two more will soon be up and running and Amor, who moved to Cheltenham a couple of years ago, said: “At the moment we’ve got three Flat horses and three Jump horses, the plan is to have no more than 20 people attached to each horse.”

The other two Jump horses are The Flying Falco and Sweet Serene while the three Flat horses, who can run on turf and all-weather, are Landlordtothestars, Joolianoss and Wonderful Wendy.

All the horses are owned by Preece – Wonderful Wendy is named after his mum – and Amor added: “We’re in it for the enjoyment. It’s Barry’s concept and we’re confident we’ve got a really good business model. We’ll put on social events, we want to create a community.”

Landlordtothestars was the first to run under the Turf Wars Racing Club colours at Bath at the end of last week, while Sweet Serene finished fourth in a hurdle race at Hereford on Monday.

That was a pretty decent run and Amor said: “That was her first time over hurdles, she was a little bit green but she enjoyed it, we’re very pleased.”

Jockey Tabitha Worsley was also very happy and Amor continued: “We’re confident we’ll have winners.

“Racing is at the core of what we are doing, the dream in the future is to have runners at big meetings such as Ascot and Cheltenham.”
