Hunter Chase Evening meeting is perfect finale to the season at Cheltenham Racecourse
Cheltenham > Sport > Horse Racing

Like a very good book or film, there is always an excellent ending to the race season at Cheltenham.
That’s because the finishing line is reached with the ever-popular Hunter Chase Evening meeting, which this year takes place on Friday 4th May (first race 4.55pm).
It’s the meeting where the top point-to-pointers get the chance to shine on the biggest jumps stage in the world and Ian Renton, the main man at Cheltenham Racecourse, is, as you’d expect, very much looking forward to it.
“It’s a lovely way to end the season,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity for the leading amateur jockeys to get themselves into the winner’s enclosure.”
He’s spot on, of course, and last year the seven races were won by seven different jockeys.
Alex Edwards was one of those successful jockeys, and he had a smile as wide as the Cheltenham parade ring after steering the Phillip Rowley-trained Barel of Laughs to victory in the feature race, the Timico Mixed Open Gold Cup Final Hunters’ Chase.
For many of the other jockeys, just to get the chance to ride around Cheltenham is something special.
That’s something that 59-year-old Renton, who has spent a lifetime involved with horses, has never done and he admits it’s something he’d like to do, before adding with a laugh: “Not over the jumps, that would get me divorced!”
He doesn’t want that, of course, but what he does want is as many people as possible to attend the Hunter Chase meeting after-party at the Centaur which gets under way not too long after the last race at 8.25pm.
Last year it was Greg James who was pumping out the tunes and this year it is his BBC radio colleagues Jo Whiley and Huw Stephens providing the live DJ set.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
