Summer hockey league ends in style

There were lots of jolly hockey sticks and much, much more at the final round of matches in the Hockey Fever Summer League.

Teams dressed up as zombies, 70s disco dancers and grandmas and grandads as the curtain was brought down on another season.

The fancy dress was the brainchild of Tanya Pyrka – the Hockey Fever League’s social secretary – who attended the campaign’s last hurrah as a cavewoman.

The Hockey Fever League has been going for three or four years and is for people who want to play the sport for fun without the pressure of playing for promotion and relegation.

Teams are seven-a-side and now that the summer season has ended, a Hockey Fever Winter League will start at Bentham on Wednesday nights.

Pyrka, 25, has been playing social hockey for the past year and she admits she wished she’d discovered the sport sooner.

“Taking part is the most important thing,” she said. “We play for fun but we do have league winners. This year’s summer league winners were Here 4 Beer.”
