Hartpury graduate Tom Sloman wins selection for Walker Cup
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Friday, 30th August 2019, 09:00
Hartpury College graduate Tom Sloman has been selected to play in the most prestigious competition in amateur golf.
The former Hartpury Golf Academy player has been named in the Great Britain and Northern Ireland (GB&I) team to face the United States in the 47th Walker Cup.
First played in 1922, the Walker Cup is contested by leading amateur golfers every two years and organised by The R&A and the United States Golf Association (USPGA).
Matt Ellis, Golf Academy Manager at Hartpury, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled that Tom has been named in the Great Britain and Ireland team for this year’s Walker Cup.
“It’s an exceptional achievement for Tom, particularly as the GB&I selectors had such a strong group of players from which to choose their 10 players for the match.
“Tom’s a great inspiration to our current students within the Golf Academy at Hartpury, whose own successes in national competitions certainly bodes well for the future if they continue to put in the necessary hard work and commitment.”
The US have won 36 of the 46 matches, with GB&I winning nine and one match tied, heading into this year’s contest at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, Liverpool, on 7-8th September.
GB&I captain Craig Watson said: “The Walker Cup is a fantastic opportunity for these amateur golfers to demonstrate their talents on the big stage and it will be an experience that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
“We are looking forward to the match at Hoylake and I’m sure the players will give it their very best to win.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
