Warren and Cathy Blackmore are a big part of the team at Sherdons Golf Club
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Wednesday, 24th July 2019, 09:00
There can’t be too many golf clubs around the country where both the husband and wife are a captain.
But that’s the case at Sherdons Golf Club and, not only that, Warren and Cathy Blackmore are both into their second year in charge.
Captains are usually in post for a year but Warren explained: “Richard Ballard who owns the club asked us if we’d carry on for a second year and it’s something we’re happy to do.”
Warren, who is 52, has been a keen golfer for many years.
“I started when I was 18 or 19,” he said. “I used to play at Cleeve. Sherdons didn’t open until 1995 and I joined in 2002/03.”
Sherdons is a nine-hole course that can be found in Tredington, near Tewkesbury, and these days boasts some 350 members.
Cathy has been playing the game for only three years.
“I was the catalyst for getting her to play,” Warren said. “She had a few lessons with Richard (Ballard), who is also the professional, and she’s now playing off 29.
“She’d only been playing just over a year when Richard asked her to be captain. I think he liked the thought of a husband and wife as captains, it brings out the family aspect of the club.”
Warren plays off 10 – “That’s the lowest I’ve been,” he said – and although Sherdons is a family-orientated club he says there are also some good golfers there as well.
So what are Warren’s strengths as a golfer?
“I think my consistency,” he said. “I don’t get flustered, I don’t lose myself in trying to be too competitive. I don’t try to outdrive or outscore people, it doesn’t bode well. I just plod along.”
He does a little bit more than plod, of course, and says that he has reduced his handicap by five since becoming captain.
“The more you play, the more consistent you become,” he said. “I’ve never had a lesson, my swing is natural, it hasn’t changed.”
The Blackmores live in Northway which is just a very long Rory McIlroy drive from Sherdons and Warren added: “It’s a lovely course. The greens are some of the best I’ve played on in the county, they’re very good.
“We’ve got a young lad who has taken over looking after them – Mikey Evans – he’s done a wonderful job.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
