Top racing man Carl Llewellyn looking forward to big day at Gloucester Golf Club in aid of Injured Jockeys Fund
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 13th August 2018, 09:00
Two-times Grand National winner Carl Llewellyn is one of a host of top names from the world of racing who is taking part in a big charity golf day later this month.
The event in aid of the Injured Jockeys Fund takes place at Gloucester Golf Club on Friday 24th August and has been organised by the golf club’s captain Darren Smith, who is a big fan of National Hunt racing.
And while Smith likes all things racing – he has a part share in four horses – it’s fair to say that 53-year-old Llewellyn is a big fan of all things golf.
Nigel Twiston-Davies’ assistant trainer, who lives in Temple Guiting, is a member of Naunton Downs Golf Club as well as the Cotswolds Club in Chipping Norton.
He likes to be out playing golf as much as he can in the summer and said with a laugh: “I practise as much as the pro’s but I’m not as good as them!”
He’s still pretty decent though because he plays off 11 and says he is looking forward to playing at Gloucester, a course he has never played before.
So what are his strengths and weaknesses as a golfer?
“I’m not long off the tee,” he admitted, “normally my short game saves me which you need if you don’t hit it long.
“I don’t usually get into too much trouble round a course – I don’t get double and triple bogeys, I’m pretty steady.”
Some of the other top racing names taking part include John Francome, Aidan Coleman, Paddy Brennan, Graham Bradley, Michael Scudamore and Sam Thomas.
“John Francome is good, on his day he is very good,” said Llewellyn of the 65-year-old. “Graham Bradley is also a good player and Aidan Coleman plays quite well but he doesn’t get much time to play.
“Sam Thomas always wins the longest drive, he’d be good if he played more regularly.”
Other racing people who will be at the golf club on 24th August include Kim Bailey, Fergal O’Brien, Sam Twiston-Davies and Jason Maguire.
They will be there to support a day which sees the players – there will be 18 fourballs playing 18 holes and there will be a current or past jockey or trainer in each fourball – go out on the course at about 11am.
After the golf there will be a four-course a la carte meal followed by an auction and then a Q&A with guest speakers with all the proceeds going to the Injured Jockeys Fund.
“It’s a very good cause,” said Llewellyn, “they do an awful lot of good work.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
