Captain’s Log: Sally Morgan, Tewkesbury Park Golf Club
North Gloucestershire > Sport > Golf
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 26th March 2018, 09:00
Stephen Morgan is pretty well known around Gloucester.
He’s been the city’s mayor since last May and has another couple of months or so in the role before he hands over the ceremonial robes.
It’s a job that takes him out and about a lot, meeting and greeting, and quite often he’s accompanied by his wife Sally.
She’s obviously quite well known around Gloucester, too, but it’s fair to say she’s even better known at Tewkesbury Park Golf Club where she is currently captain of the ladies’ section.
“Yes, life is quite busy at the moment,” chuckled Sally.
The 71-year-old took over as captain in November and that’s a pretty impressive achievement because she only took up the sport in her mid-50s.
“I started playing 15 years ago and I never envisaged being captain,” she said. “I took up golf because my sister Glo Slatter was captain at Tewkesbury. I’d never played before.
“She was a good player, still is; I’m not!”
Sally is being a bit harsh on herself there. Her handicap maybe slightly higher than Tewkesbury-based Glo’s, who plays off 15, but anyone who plays off 23 still knows her way around a golf course.
“I can play a bit,” she laughed. “Some days are better than others.”
So what’s her strength on a golf course?
“I don’t know,” she said. “One day you can be good at something and the next day you can be rubbish at it. I suppose if there’s one thing I need to improve it’s my chipping onto the green, that’s my problem.”
As problems go, that’s not the worst to have and there are certainly many benefits to playing a game made famous by the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Arnie Palmer back in the swinging 60s.
“The social side is great,” said Sally, who lives in Gloucester. “And when you are out on the course it’s good exercise. I don’t do gyms so it’s a good walk!”
It certainly is and Sally, who was a badminton player with Gloucester club Glevum before taking up golf, has no intention of giving up the sport any time soon even though she says she was a better badminton player than she is a golfer.
“I want to play for as long as I can,” she said. “We’ve got one player, Eileen Bruce, who is in her late 80s and still walking around the course and hitting a ball. She’s amazing.”
Also amazing is the amount of money that captains of all golf clubs raise for their chosen charity during their year in office.
Sally is raising money for Footsteps Counselling and Care in Gloucester. It supports people in Gloucestershire affected by pregnancy related issues, including the loss of a baby for any reason and at any time including miscarriage, termination, stillbirth and neonatal death.
It’s also the charity that her husband is supporting during his 12 months as mayor.
As Sally says, it’s a busy time for the Morgan household – they also have two grown-up children and three grandchildren – but you get the impression they wouldn’t want it any other way.Other Images
