Super gran Kathleen Ellerker is aiming higher and higher
Author: Contributed, Posted: Monday, 15th January 2018, 12:30
When great-grandma Kathleen Ellerker did a skydive to mark her 85th birthday, she thought it would probably be her last big adrenalin-buzz – now she is wondering whether 2018 could hold another adventure in the sky.
The fun-loving pensioner says if National Star, a charity she loves, were to ask for her support she would consider jumping out of a tiny plane 10,000 feet above the ground again, or maybe even a wing walk.
“I really did love doing the skydive. I feel excited when I’m talking about it,” she says. “When you jump out you have your arms out and you feel like an eagle flying above the clouds; it’s so serene and beautiful. It’s a wonderful, wonderful feeling, floating like a bird.”
Since she was 62, she has done two bi-plane loop-the-loops and another skydive. And she says finding the money to pay for another adventure is all that would stop her.
Mrs Ellerker, who has seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, lives at a Severn Vale retirement scheme in Churchdown. Her most recent jump was with four staff members from Severn Vale Housing offices in Tewkesbury – Penny Williams, Kayure Patel, Kate Routledge and Jo Mitchell.
She raised about £1,000 from the jump which was donated to National Star where her daughter Lillian works. Severn Vale Housing raised about £2,500 more for the Gloucestershire charity which supports young people with complex disabilities and acquired brain injuries.
Mrs Ellerker said: “I haven’t got anything planned but I would do it all again if the occasion arises and I could afford it. National Star are fantastic and I’d do anything for them.
“People at church ask me what I’m going to do next – I keep thinking a wing walk would be good. It looks scary but I have watched them and they are tied on really well. It would be marvellous to be looking down on the earth.”
Mrs Ellerker’s family organised an 85th birthday picnic at the airfield directly after her jump, with about 20 of her family members there to celebrate.
“It was an unforgettable day,” Mrs Ellerker said. “I was so happy to do this for National Star, they do such marvellous work.
“I’ve met some of the young people with disabilities and they are lovely and the staff are lovely too. I feel humbled to have done this for them – they deserve every penny.”Other Images
