Wotton Rovers host high-flying Old Richians on Saturday looking to produce back-to-back eye-catching results in Division One of the Stroud League.

Four days ago they went to then leaders Minchinhampton and won 4-2 and now they are hoping to inflict what would be only a second defeat of the league campaign on Old Richians.

The Gloucester team are the new leaders in the 12-strong division even though their game at home to bottom-of-the-table Stroud United at the weekend was postponed.

They have the same number of points as Minchinhampton – 29 – but Minchinhampton’s defeat by Wotton means Old Richians now have a marginally better goal difference.

Old Richians have also played three games fewer than Minchinhampton and Wotton secretary Martyn Excell said: “I think they will be a tougher test, they’ve got a better record.”

Wotton’s win on Saturday was their fifth in the league this season and lifted them up to sixth in the table.

“It wasn’t a surprise to me, we’ve got some good young players,” said Excell,  a former player who has been involved with the club for 50 years.

“When they put their mind to it they can beat anyone in the division.”

Korbin Walker and Oscar Nelmes got two goals apiece at Minchinhampton and Excell continued: “They are both young players, Oscar is only 16.”

The club, who were playing in the County League in the early noughties, are managed by James Thompson and Excell added: “He’s Wotton through and through.

“The aim is to win promotion and get into the Northern Senior League but the Stroud League is a tough division to get out of, there are some very good teams.”
