Winchcombe Town are flying high at the top of Division One of the Cheltenham Football League.

They head to Prestbury Rovers having won four and drawn one of their opening five games, and their supporters will be hopeful that they can collect another three points tomorrow.

Their flagship team were relegated from Northern Senior League Division Two at the end of the 2021/22 campaign and while the aim is obviously to get out of the Cheltenham League at some stage, manager Will Major is not putting any time pressure on himself or his players.

“We just want to improve on last season,” he said. “We finished sixth which was right in the middle of the division.

“If we can stay near the top and among the challengers I’d obviously be very happy, but there’s no rush because we’re a young side.”

Winchcombe won eight and lost 12 games last season so they have already picked up more than half the points that they gained in the whole of 2022/23.

“We’ve started really well,” said Major. “We’ve brought in some quality, young players.

“Harry Staddon, who plays in midfield, has done really well for us, as has another young midfielder Finn Marlow.

“Andy Monty New has been banging in the goals. He’s back from university and has been playing through the middle, he’s done fantastically well.”

The centre-forward already has six goals to his name and while the youngsters have taken centre stage so far, Major is also keen to name-check one of his more experienced players.

“Josh Allen has been massive,” he said. “He’s had a long-term injury and he came back towards the end of last season.

“He’s huge to have around the club, his attitude is first rate. He’ll play anywhere you ask him and he’ll run himself into the ground.”

Prestbury have picked up just four points from their opening five games, but Major is expecting a tough challenge.

“We know all about Prestbury, they’re always a tough side to break down,” he said. “We know we’re going to be in a game.”

Winchcombe’s policy of bringing in younger players began last season with the likes of goalkeeper Spencer Broughton and midfielder Benjie Bingham, and with Jack Galpin set to return in the new year following a broken leg, things are certainly on the up.

Galpin, a defender or midfielder, has been helping out with the coaching and Major added: “I’m very pleased with the way everything is going, we had a great win against Lakeside Reserves a couple of weeks ago.”
