Rodborough Old Boys enjoy penalty shootout success to win the GFA Intermediate Cup North
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Thursday, 16th April 2026, 14:30
Rodborough Old Boys held their nerve in a penalty shootout to win the GFA Intermediate Cup North last night.
They converted all four of their spotkicks to overcome Cheltenham United 4-1 after the game had finished 0-0 over 90 minutes.
Harrison Amey, Joe Beadle, Jack Chudleigh and Lewis Kerry were the players on target and manager John Owen said: “I was always confident, 100 per cent.
“I’ve got players who want to take penalties, that takes the pressure off.”
It was the second time in this season’s competition that they'd won a penalty shootout because they beat Staunton & Corse Reserves 3-1 after the quarter-final tie had ended 2-2 in normal time.
Owen was delighted with last night’s win at Kayte Lane.
“We’re buzzing, very happy,” he said. “It was a great night, everyone who was involved in it was fantastic.”
Rodborough have scored 60 goals in 19 games in Division 3S of the Stroud League this season – they are through to the end-of-season play-offs – but they couldn’t find a way past Cheltenham United, who are currently second in Division One of the Cheltenham League.
“It was a very tight game,” said Owen. “It was one of those when the occasion maybe took over. It was bit cagey, I think we played within ourselves.”
Cheltenham United co-manager Dan Beorby agreed.
“It was a really tight contest,” he said. “They took their penalties really well. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be for us but I couldn’t be prouder of the lads.”Copyright © 2026 The Local Answer Limited.
