Randwick manager Lee Daniels in upbeat mood after positive start to the season
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Wednesday, 4th October 2023, 11:30
Randwick Football Club have regrouped and they are looking to kick on after a bright start to the season.
They are top of Division Three of the Stroud League after winning six and drawing one of their opening seven games, a run of form that has obviously pleased their manager Lee Daniels.
The 46-year-old took over as boss midway through last season but was unable to prevent the club from finishing in the bottom two of Division One and being relegated.
“We asked to be demoted two divisions,” said Daniels, who played for the club back in the day. “We’d lost quite a few players and the gap between the first team and the reserves was too big.”
The club have since attracted a number of new players and they are certainly making an impact, so much so, that Daniels is now very hopeful of winning promotion to Division Two.
And with the reserves currently going well in Division Six, if all goes to plan the gap between the two teams will remain unchanged in 2024/25.
“We’ve taken on a few new players, they’re good lads,” said Daniels, who used to manage Chalford 3rds.
“The target has to be promotion but we’d like to win the title and go through the season undefeated. That won’t be easy in this division because there are some good teams.”
Randwick host third-placed Stroud United on Saturday and Daniels, who works closely with assistant manager Martin Scrivens, continued: “The whole attitude of the club has changed. We beat Berkeley Town Reserves 9-0 but I was actually disappointed because I felt we should have won by a bigger margin.”
Randwick have scored 29 goals in their seven games so far – they’ve conceded just six – with new centre-forward Ashley Hunt, who joined from Chalford, making a good early impression.
He has got six goals, as has Charlie Diston, while Fabio Caldarone has got five.
“We shipped a lot of goals last season so we’ve switched to a back three this season with two wing backs,” said Daniels.
“But we can switch it up if we need to. My philosophy has always been that the players have to enjoy what they’re doing and they have to engage in what we’re trying to achieve.”Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
