Impressive Sharpness at the double as they add County League title to GFA Senior Amateur Cup win
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 5th May 2026, 10:10
Super Sharpness are champions of the County League after back-to-back wins over the bank holiday weekend.
Yesterday’s 3-0 victory at home to Tytherington Rocks coupled with Filton’s Athletic’s 4-1 reverse at home to Frampton United ensured they clinched the title with two games still to play.
Their league success comes just five days after they overcame Longlevens Reserves in a seven-goal thriller in the GFA Senior Amateur Cup final and club secretary Tom Paterson said: “It’s been a cracking few days, really, really good.”
Sharpness set up yesterday’s chance to clinch the title with an imposing 5-1 victory at home to Ruardean Hill Rangers on Saturday – they were 5-0 up at the break – but yesterday’s win wasn’t quite as straightforward.
“It was a bit nervy,” admitted Paterson, a former first-team player for 20 years. “It was still 0-0 at half time but once we got the first goal the second came quickly. We were excellent in the second half.”
Marley Thomas, the nephew of joint manager Brad Thomas, scored the first and Jack Smith the second before Thomas completed the scoring.
Filton would have remained in the title race, mathematically at least, had they won yesterday after winning 2-1 at Totterdown on Saturday.
They still have three games remaining but are now 12 points adrift of Sharpness, who have led the 17-strong division pretty much all season.
William James Tainton got two and there was one apiece for Smith, Thomas Frankham and Ben Hemmings against Ruardean and Paterson said: “Saturday was a lot more comfortable.
“Once we got our first there was a flurry of goals. We should have done a little bit better in the second half but the game was won.
“They were two very good performances over the weekend coming after the cup final. We had a few players missing with injuries.”
Joint managers Thomas and Ben Gibbs are now looking forward to playing in Division One of the Hellenic League next season and Paterson is in optimistic mood.
Sharpness have won 24 and drawn three of their 30 league games this season and Paterson said: “I feel we’ve a got a strong group, a strong squad and a strong team.
“There’s a very good togetherness. If the majority of players stay and we maybe add a couple I think we’ll give a very good account of ourselves. I’m confident we’ll be okay.”
Sharpness’ final two games see them host Wick on Saturday and then Bromley Heath United a week tomorrow.
