Gloucester City's home game against Tiverton Town in March will be a first in 25 years
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Thursday, 30th January 2025, 09:30
Gloucester City host AFC Totton on Saturday, looking to build on their 1-0 win at mid-table Bracknell Town on Tuesday evening.
A first-half goal by Joe Hanks secured the points and took them to within three points of second-placed Totton, who have played two games fewer than Gloucester.
Mike Cook’s team are in third spot, some 11 points behind leaders Merthyr Town with both clubs having 15 games remaining in the 22-strong division.
Only the champions are guaranteed promotion with the next four teams going into the end-of-season play-offs.
Gloucester look well-placed to secure one of the play-off spots – they are 11 points clear of sixth-placed Walton & Hersham who have played two games fewer – but long-time fan Matt Phillips, who is also the club’s head of communications, is not giving up on the title just yet.
“There’s still a long way to go,” he told The Local Answer. “Better teams than Merthyr have let bigger leads slip and they’ve just sold Lewys Twamley to Yeovil Town. He’s a midfield goalscorer, he was one of their best players.”
The games will certainly come thick and fast for Gloucester over the next few weeks and Phillips is particularly looking forward to the game against Tiverton Town at the TigerTurf Stadium at the end of March.
That’s because it will be played on Friday the 28th, the first time Gloucester will have hosted a home game on a Friday night for more than 25 years.
The game will kick-off at 7.45pm and the club plan to make it a special occasion.
“We’ll have a live band pitchside,” said Phillips. “We need to reach out to a new audience. Friday night games work very well for Gloucester Rugby.”
Gloucester City are averaging more than 1,000 for their home games this season.
A crowd of 899 watched Gloucester draw 1-1 with Newport County in their last home Friday night game in November 1999.
It was a Dr Martens League Premier Division game with Matt Rose getting their goal.Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
