Fairford Town are flying after taking their goals tally to 11 in their last two games.

A fortnight after winning 7-3 at Hellenic League Premier Division title hopefuls Slimbridge, they were at it again as they travelled to Roman Glass St George on Saturday and romped to a 4-0 win.

Roman Glass are second in the table and look certain to make the end-of-season play-offs so it was undeniably another huge result for Fairford.

And it was another huge result for their manager Sam Collier, who took sole charge of the team just three games ago.

He had worked as joint manager alongside Jamie Reid for the first half of the season before Reid decided to step down last month.

Fairford had lost their previous four league and cup games before the eye-catching win at Slimbridge, and Collier said: “We’ve just tried to simplify things.

“We’ve given the lads clear instructions. We want them to go out and enjoy themselves, we want them to play with smiles on their faces.

“They work hard all week. We want them to play with freedom, we don’t want them to feel any pressure.”

Goals by Charles Holliday and Harrison Edwards gave them a 2-0 half-time lead against Roman Glass, and Sol Pryce and Elliot Haffenden completed the scoring after the break.

“We hit a bit of a blip over Christmas and it’s nice to turn things around,” continued Collier.

“We’ve haven’t changed the formation, we’re still playing 4-3-3. We’ve asked the attackers to attack and the defenders to defend.

“They’ve worked hard without the ball and they’ve been good with it.”

Collier, who is 39, joined Fairford at the start of the season after being in charge of Royal Wootton Bassett for seven seasons.

“I loved working with Jamie but ultimately being in charge solely is what I’m used to,” he said. “The buck stops with me.”

The games don’t get any easier for Fairford because they travel to Premier Division leaders Droitwich Spa for a Hellenic League Challenge Cup quarter-final tie on Saturday.

“It’s a cup we want to try and win,” said Collier, who is looking to build on the club’s improved form.

“We’ve still got 15 games to go in the league, we want to win as many of them as we can.

“Fairford is a great club with great people, it’s a hardworking club, I definitely want to be here next season.”

The win over Roman Glass saw them climb into the top half of the 20-team division and Collier continued: “Hopefully we’ll continue our free-flowing, goalscoring football. The way we’re playing we’d be first on Match of the Day!”
