Ethan Dunbar hoping to fire Bishop's Cleeve to more FA Cup glory
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Thursday, 26th September 2024, 10:00
Ethan Dunbar is looking forward to Saturday’s FA Cup tie against Chesham United. Picture, Henry NunnFlying wing Ethan Dunbar is hoping to sprinkle some more FA Cup magic for Bishop’s Cleeve on Saturday.
The just-turned 21-year-old scored the third goal in their never-to-be-forgotten 3-0 second qualifying round win over Torquay United at a packed Kayte Lane 12 days ago.
And he’d love to get on the scoresheet and help his side to another victory when Chesham United come calling in a third qualifying round tie in a couple of days’ time.
The Buckinghamshire club play in National League South, the same as Torquay and a couple of levels above Bishop’s Cleeve, who compete in Southern League Division One South.
Chesham are currently 10th in their 24-strong division, five places and three points below Torquay, who won 3-2 at Chesham at the end of August.
“That game against a Torquay was special,” said Dunbar, who lives in Gloucester. “I’ve played in quite a few big games but this was the FA Cup and I scored one of the goals.”
And a good goal it was too, with Dunbar firing home with his weaker left foot from the edge of the penalty area after being fed by Ross Langworthy.
Chesham won’t be easy of course – they were Southern League Premier Division South champions last season – but Dunbar is in confident mood.
“We’ve got to give them respect, but not too much,” he said.
“We’ve shown what we can do by beating Torquay, we’ve set the bar high but we’ve just got to get the job done.
“If we can beat Torquay, we can beat them, it’s a game we definitely want to win.
“The third qualifying round is serious but the fourth qualifying round is even more serious, that’s when the bigger clubs come in.”
Bishop’s Cleeve have reached the fourth qualifying round only once in their 119-year history. That was back in 2005-06 during manager Paul Collicutt’s first spell in charge, while Chesham made it all the way through to the third round back in 1979/80.
More than 1,200 fans were packed into Kayte Lane to see Cleeve’s demolition of Torquay and former St Peter’s School pupil Dunbar is hoping for another big turnout on Saturday.
“The reaction after we’d beaten Torquay was incredible,” added Dunbar, who has scored five goals in all competitions this season.
That’s in addition to the 17 he scored in 2023/24, his first at the club after previously playing for Slimbridge and Longlevens.
“I always set myself targets, I’m quite ambitious,” he said.
“I want to score 20-plus goals this season.
“My most natural position is playing down the middle, but I’ve been playing on the right, I had 15 assists last season.
“I’m only 5ft 4in but I’m very quick, I’ve got an eye for goal and I work hard on and off the pitch.”
He certainly does because last season he reckons he played 40-50 games – he also plays for Hartpury University, where he is a student, and England Universities.
“I’m pretty consistent and I’m pretty reliable,” he said. “Even if I’m not having my best game I’ll still work hard.”
Cleeve lost their most recent game 2-0 at Melksham Town in the FA Trophy – “It was a bad day at the office,” admitted Dunbar – while Chesham's most recent game saw them draw 2-2 at Maidstone United.
Saturday’s game kicks off at 3pm.Other Images
