Cheltenham Saracens chairman Graham Roberts delighted with start to the season
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Wednesday, 20th August 2025, 09:00
Cheltenham Saracens have made a bright start to the new season.
They’ve won their opening four games in Division One of the Hellenic League, scored 13 goals along the way and are second behind Malmesbury Victoria having played one game fewer.
“It’s been a good start, very good, but it’s early days, we’re not getting carried away,” said chairman Graham Roberts. “There are lots of games to be played yet.”
The club finished 14th of 17 last season, winning seven games and collecting 26 points.
“Last season we had a very young side many of whom were new to the Hellenic League,” continued Roberts, who has been chairman for the past six years.
“They’re a bit more experienced and we’ve also brought in some new faces.
"Ryan Dobbins and Tommy Bond have joined this season and they’ve both been getting goals, we were a bit short of goals last season.”
Dobbins has rejoined the club and manager Ryan Betteridge, who has been in charge for six years, will be hoping that he and Bond can maintain their early-season form when they travel to Wantage Town for an FA Vase first qualifying round tie on Saturday.
Wantage play in the same division as Saracens – they have five points from five games after winning one and drawing three – and Roberts added: “It would be nice to have a cup run, we had one a couple of years ago.”
That was in the Gloucestershire Trophy when they went all the way to the final before losing to Mangotsfield United 3-2.
“We’ve been slowly growing the club over the past few years,” continued Roberts. “We want to get the club on a stable footing, grow the youth section and get into the Premier Division of the Hellenic League.”
The club also have a thriving women’s section and Roberts added: “This is their third season and they’ve gone from strength to strength, they are really committed.”
Away from the pitch, there is plenty of good news too with the club hoping that work will start next month on a new clubhouse at Petersfield Park.
They hope it will be ready to use before the end of the season.Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
