One of the highlights of the Cheltenham Football League season is almost upon us.

The Senior Charities Cup final – the league’s major knockout competition – takes place on Wednesday evening at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium, home of League One club Cheltenham Town.

Cheltenham Civil Service Reserves will take on AFC Kempsey in an eagerly-awaited clash that will kick off at 7pm.

“It’s our FA Cup final,” said Cheltenham League fixture secretary John Hunt. “It’s our showpiece occasion, all our sponsors will be there, all the charities we support will be there.

“Cheltenham Town are very good to us, the pitch is superb still, even at the end of the season, there is a lot of grass on it. We’re all looking forward to it.”

None more so than the players, officials and supporters of the two clubs involved of course.

Cheltenham Civil Service Reserves have already won the Division One North title and will go into the game as favourites against a team who play in Division Three.

“It’s a David v Goliath game,” continued Hunt. “It’s like Liverpool playing Cheltenham Town, that’s the gulf between the two teams in terms of their positions in the league.

“Civil Service have stormed to the Division One North title but I’ve got a funny feeling this game isn’t going to be as clearcut as it seems.

“Kempsey are on the crest of a wave, they’ve had a great season.”

Wednesday’s cup final is the first of four Cheltenham League finals over the next two-and-a-half weeks.
