The new Cheltenham Football League season gets under way this week and it’s fair to say the players are going to have to hit the ground running.

That’s because less than 48 hours after the big kick-off on Thursday evening, the teams will go again on Saturday 3rd September for a second round of matches.

Forty-four teams across four divisions will be competing in the league in 2022/23, with 12 teams in the Premier Division and Division Two, 11 in Division One and nine in Division Three.

“Four teams have withdrawn since the AGM in June,” explained Cheltenham League fixture secretary John Hunt.

The most recent to pull out are Kempsey Corinthians Exiles Development, which is why there are only nine teams in the bottom division.

“It’s a shame,” admitted Hunt, “but at this stage there is nothing we can do about it.”

Nonetheless, Hunt is pleased that there are a number of new teams in the league this season with Shurdington Rovers and Montpellier entering 2nd teams in Division Three, while Winchcombe Town have dropped down from the Northern Senior League into the Premier Division.

Andoversford Reserves, meanwhile, have been re-named Cheltenham Athletic Reserves and will play in Division Three.
