Bishop’s Cleeve are raring to go as they prepare for one of the biggest games in their near 120-year history.

The Southern League Division One South club host Torquay United in a mouthwatering FA Cup second qualifying round tie on Saturday (3pm).

It’s expected to be a 1,300-plus sell-out at Kayte Lane, with Paul Collicutt’s men hoping to spring a major upset against a club who were established in the Football League for many years.

“You just never know,” said Cleeve skipper and centre-forward Ross Langworthy.

“It’s a huge tie, it’s great for the club and great for the players. The interest around the club is brilliant.”

Torquay are currently playing in National League South, a couple of levels above Cleeve, and are fifth in the 24-strong division after losing 2-0 at Welling on Saturday.

Former Crystal Palace, Derby and Bolton defender Dean Moxey, now 38, has been a regular for them this season and while promotion to the National League is the clear target for new manager Paul Wotton, both he and Neil Warnock, the club’s football adviser, would love a run in the FA Cup.

Torquay are expected to bring hundreds of fans to Cleeve – they attract more than 3,000 to their homes games – and Langworthy added: “This is an occasion, you don’t play games like this every week.”

And while it most certainly will be a major occasion, Cleeve won’t be heading into the game just to make up the numbers.

“For us as players, it’s a free hit,” continued 31-year-old Langworthy. “We’re not expected to turn them over but you never know, we want to give a good account of ourselves.

“The club are working really hard to make it a special day for everyone, they want the fans who turn up for this game to come back again.

“And if we did manage to win, it would be a massive upset.”

Langworthy says that this game is the biggest of his career.

“When I was with Shortwood United we reached the first round of the FA Cup against Port Vale, but I was a substitute and I didn’t get on,” he said.

“I’ve also played in a play-off final when there was more on the line but as a one-off game this is the biggest.”

Torquay, whose former players include Lee Sharpe, Justin Fashanu and Adebayo Akinfenwa, dropped out of the Football League 10 years ago and last season was particularly tough for them because they went into administration.

Following the announcement, manager Gary Johnson, now director of football at Cheltenham Town, left by mutual consent.

Cleeve, meanwhile,  are going into the game on a good run of form having recovered well after losing their opening two league games of the campaign.

They are unbeaten in their last six league and cup games – they won 2-0 at Willand Rovers in the FA Trophy on Saturday - and Langworthy said: “We’re feeling good.

“We were really unlucky in the two games we lost. We played well in both and could have won both but gave away a couple of late goals.

“Other than that we’ve been really strong at the back and we’ve kept a number of clean sheets.

“That has given us the platform to go on and win games.”

The normally freescoring Langworthy has scored just two goals this season – both in the league – and he added: “Maybe I’ve been saving one for the Cup!”
