AFC Renegades produce shock of the round to knock Tewkesbury Town out of Senior Charities Cup

High-flying AFC Renegades transferred their Cheltenham League Division Three form to the Senior Charities Cup, as they produced the shock of the third round.

Renegades, who are second only to St Paul’s United in their division, travelled to Tewkesbury Town, who began the day in third spot in Division One.

But the step up proved to be no problem for the Renegades as they marched into the next round with a 4-2 win.

The team everyone will be wary of, inevitably, are Cheltenham Civil Service, the runaway leaders in Division One. And they certainly proved unlucky for Bredon Reserves, of Division Two, who were walloped 13-0 on their own pitch.

Bishop’s Cleeve III still have an interest in three cup competitions after a 4-2 win over lowly Division Two side Prestbury Rovers.

Another Division Two side to go out to higher standard opposition were Pittville United as they went down 4-1 at Wayne Baker’s Newton.

Whaddon United Reserves, who have had such a tough time in Division One this season, at least have something to cheer in the cup, because they are still in the competition after a 4-3 win at Southside Star of Division Two.

In an all-Division One clash, a single goal was enough for Shurdington Rovers to get past Brockworth Albion Reserves, while FC Barometrics hit four without reply past Gala Wilton Reserves.

St Paul’s United are also through to the next round, although they didn’t have to kick a ball because their opponents, RSG, were unable to raise a side.

Cheltenham Civil Service tightened their grip at the top of Division One even though they were involved in the cup. That’s because nearest rivals Upton Town slipped to a shock 2-1 reverse at home to Dowty Dynamos.

The result was all the more surprising because Dynamos, who are now back up to third, had made such a poor start to 2018. Upton still trail Service by 14 points with just two games in hand.

Fifth-placed Andoversford closed to within three points of Upton with a 2-1 win at lowly Kings.

Only one game was played in Division Two – Fintan defeated Hanley Swan 3-1 – but there were four matches in Division Three and six in Division Four.

FC Lakeside Reserves started the day propping up Division Three, and they remain on the bottom after going down 3-1 at home to Charlton Rovers Reserves.

The team immediately above them, Cheltenham United, went down by the same scoreline at home to Cheltenham Civil Service 3rds.

Improving Kings defeated Leckhampton Rovers 5-3, while Dowty Dynamos Reserves edged out Fintan Reserves by the odd goal in five.

Into Division Four and leaders Prestbury Rovers Reserves maintained their proud 100 per cent winning record – but only just. Just one goal separated them and Fintan Reseves at the end of the 90 minutes.

Woodmancote United, one of a clutch of teams in the chasing pack behind Prestbury, got back to winning ways with a 2-1 win at Winchcombe Town Reserves, while there were wins for Malvern Vale (4-1) and Malvern Vale FC Academy (5-1) over Gala Wilton 3rds and Cheltenham Saracens 3rds respectively.

Elsewhere, there were plenty of goals at Andoversford 3rds, although not for the home team, who were beaten 8-1 by Bishop’s Cleeve Development Reserves.

And there were lots of goals at Welland Reserves too, although this game was much closer with the home side overcoming bottom club Charlton Rovers 3rds 6-4.

The Cheltenham League is sponsored by Bristol Street Motors Cheltenham Ford.
