Connor Hart goal takes Cheltenham Civil Service so close to Cheltenham League title

There really is no stopping the Cheltenham Civil Service bandwagon.

They took another huge step towards winning Division One of the Cheltenham Football League, sponsored by Bristol Street Motors, with a 1-0 win at Bishop’s Cleeve III through a Connor Hart goal.

It means that they could be crowned champions before the end of February because they need just two points to secure the title.

And next up for them is a home game against lowly Shurdington Rovers on Saturday.

There is still plenty for Cleeve to play for this season, and they will be looking for revenge when they take on Service in the County Cup semi-final next month.

And they won’t be short of confidence for that game as they have already beaten Service in the Charities Cup this season.

Second-placed Upton at least made Service wait another week before claiming the title as they eased to a 2-1 win over Newton, but they remain 17 points behind the leaders and have just six games to play.

Andoversford are a team who are capable of beating anyone on their day, especially when 21-goal top scorer Sonnie Burrows is in the side, and they climbed into the top four with a 2-1 win over Tewkesbury Town, who dropped a place to third.

Andoversford and Tewkesbury are now only separated by goal difference.

Whaddon United Reserves won their first league game of the season at the 14th time of asking when they defeated the team immediately above them, RSG, 1-0. It takes Kev Taylor’s team onto four points – seven points adrift of RSG but with three games in hand.

In the final game in Division One, honours ended even as Shurdington Rovers drew 1-1 with Kings.

It was a great weekend for Division Two side Cheltenham Civil Service Reserves the previous week, and they didn’t even kick a ball. That’s because the second-placed club saw leaders The Beeches implode against bottom club Pittville United, losing 3-1 and being shown two red cards.

The Beeches were without a fixture on Saturday and Service took full advantage as they defeated Fintan 2-0. Dan Midwinter’s men are now four points adrift of the leaders having played three games fewer.

After their impressive win against The Beeches, Pittville went into their game against Tewkesbury Town Reserves, the team directly above them, full of confidence. The three points the previous weekend moved them off bottom spot, and they are now ninth after defeating Tewkesbury 2-1.

Southside Star eased into the top four with a 3-1 win over Hanley Swan, while lowly Prestbury Rovers shared the spoils with mid-table Bredon Reserves in a 2-2 draw.

And that was the scoreline when another two mid-table teams – FC Barometric Reserves and Gala Wilton Reserves – met, with sixth-placed Barometrics remaining four points and two places above Gala.

The top two in Division Three went head to head the previous weekend, and St Paul’s and AFC Renegades couldn’t be separated as they fought out a 2-2 draw. With the reverse fixture due in April, both teams know that the title is in their own hands. Both teams were in action this weekend and both faced teams in the lower half of the table.

Renegades looked to set down a marker in the early kick off when they faced Leckhampton Rovers, a game that would finish as the first half ended at St Paul’s. After dispatching Rovers 6-1 the attention moved to St Paul’s.

St Paul’s hosted a Kings Reserves team who have improved as the season has gone on. A 1-0 win last time out has moved them away from the bottom two and left them in a place of relative safety.

However, getting anything against St Paul’s was always going to be a tall order, and so it proved as the leaders won 3-0.

Windyridge Rovers and FC Barometrics III are two of the teams who are looking to push Brockworth for third spot. They met at The Newlands and Barometrics eased above their opponents into fourth place after a 3-0 win.

Cheltenham Civil Service III were beaten by Leckhampton the previous week, and the County Cup semi-finalists were hoping to get back to winning ways against Falcons Reserves.

It was not to be, however, as lowly Falcons picked up a 2-1 win.

The final game in the division saw Dowty Dynamos Reserves host Cheltenham United. While Dowty’s are safe in mid-table, United are just a point off bottom and all too aware of their position. Despite the difference in positions the teams could not be separated as they drew 2-2.

There was nothing unlucky about number 13 for Prestbury Rovers Reserves in Division Four, as they preserved their 100 per cent winning record with a 1-0 win over Welland Reserves.

And game number 13 also proved lucky for bottom club Charlton Rovers III. It was the first time they weren’t beaten in the league this season, as they secured a 3-3 draw at Smiths Athletic Reserves.

They are still a long way adrift of the rest of the teams in the division, however, as they now have minus two points.

Cheltenham Saracens III, the team directly above Rovers, earned an impressive 2-1 win the previous week against Fintan Reserves.

The scoresheet made impressive reading for club stalwarts and veterans, Colin Clarke and Graham Roberts, who were the scorers on the day. After the club had just reached the first anniversary of the passing of their founder, Bob Attwood, it was fitting to see that two members who are looking to build a future for the club off the pitch are still adding value on it.

Saracens had this weekend off but the team directly above them, Andoversford III, were in action against Woodmancote United. After a mid-season blip United have slipped down the table, but they will be hoping that Saturday’s 2-1 win is a sign of better things to come.

Defeat at Saracens nine days ago was disappointing for mid-table Fintan and they fared no better against Malvern Vale FC 1sts, slipping to a 4-1 defeat on Saturday.

Sitting above Vale 1sts at the start of play were Malvern Vale FC Academy, and they knew they needed to take maximum points against Winchcombe Town Reserves if they wanted to retain second spot. They delivered, beating Town 3-0.

The final game saw Gala Wilton III face Bishop’s Cleeve Development Reserves. With both teams out of the title race, the match was as much about pride as points. With six goals it was an entertaining affair, with Gala bagging five of them to take the spoils.
