Why Cinderford Town boss Paul Michael is so keen for the 2017/18 fixture list to be revealed
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Friday, 7th July 2017, 09:30
Cinderford Town’s Paul Michael is probably more anxious than most managers ahead of the release of next Thursday’s Southern League fixtures for the 2017/18 season.
That’s because the 31-year-old’s wife, Beth, is expecting their second child at the beginning of October.
Fortunately for Michael, the first day of October falls on a Sunday so if all goes to plan he’ll be on the touchline watching Cinderford play in Division One South and West on Saturday 30th September.
“Hopefully, the timings will work out,” he laughed, before adding, still laughing, “it will be a bit awkward if it’s 3pm on a Saturday!”.
A home game on the 30th would help, of course, but Michael’s commitment to the club has never been in doubt since he took the reins last November, although, of course, he will be by his wife’s side at whatever time she goes into hospital.
These are exciting times for Michael – he and Beth already have a three-year-old daughter – both on and off the field as he looks ahead to his first full season in charge at Cinderford.
The former Risca United player/boss – “I live 20 minutes north of Newport towards the Valleys” – is relishing the chance to have a pre-season with the players after the difficulties of the previous campaign when relegation from the Premier Division was almost inevitable well before he arrived.
“This time of year is massively important,” said Michael, who said that the club’s supporters can expect a different style of play this season.
“We’re going to be looking to play the ball out from the back and we’ll have a different shape although I don’t want to give too much away.
“It won’t be easy and things may go wrong but pre-season gives you the chance to try things and get them right before the league campaign starts.”
Cinderford’s first pre-season friendly is at Lydney Town on Saturday (3pm) and the league season kicks off on Saturday 12th August.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
