Christian Doidge excited to be playing at Wembley with Forest Green

Christian Doidge has his eyes on the main prize as he heads to Wembley with Forest Green Rovers.

Victory over Tranmere Rovers on Sunday would take them into the Promised Land that is the Football League for the first time in the club’s history and if the dream is to become a reality then Doidge is likely to play a big part in their success.

The 6ft 2in striker has been a revelation since joining the club from Dagenham and Redbridge in the summer, scoring 26 goals in 48 games, and said: “It’s been a great move for me. The lads have been creating lots of chances for me and we’ve been winning a lot of games.

“Now we just want to finish the season off by winning promotion to the Football League. That’s why I joined the club. They’re very ambitious and I’d love to be a part of Forest Green’s history by being in the side that won promotion to the Football League for the first time.”

Not that it will be easy at the home of English football. Tranmere finished one place and nine points ahead of third-placed Forest Green in the final National League table and go into the game as warm favourites.

Against that Forest Green are unbeaten against them in the league this season, drawing one and winning one.

This is the second season in a row that Forest Green have reached the play-off final – they were beaten 3-1 by Grimsby Town last time out – but this will be Newport-born Doidge’s first game at Wembley.

“I can’t wait,” he said. “Everybody wants to play at Wembley, don’t they? I’m excited at the thought of playing there. I’m sure there will be a few nerves but I just hope we can go there and win it for the fans.”

Tranmere were an established Football League club for many years before tumbling out of League Two and Doidge knows what it’s like to play in the Football League having spent two seasons there with Dagenham.

It was not the best of times for the 24-year-old but he is confident he has what it takes to be a success at that level and is desperate to prove that with Forest Green.

So what type of striker is he?

“I’d say I’m a hardworking centre-forward,” he said. “I’m a grafter who puts pressure on the defenders. I come alive in the box and a lot of my goals come in the six-yard box. The lads give me a bit of stick about that but I don’t tend to shoot too often from outside the box!”

If he scores the winner from a yard on Sunday no one from Forest Green will be complaining!
