The remarkable rise of Forest Green Rovers was completed yesterday when they defeated Tranmere Rovers 3-1 at Wembley to earn their place in the Football League for the first time in their history.

Two Goals by Kaiyne Woolery and one by leading scorer Christian Doidge earned the Gloucestershire club victory in the National League play-off final in front of more than 18,000 fans.

It means they will renew their rivalry in 2017/18 with fellow Gloucestershire club Cheltenham Town, who made certain of their place in League Two next season with a 1-0 win over Hartlepool United in their penultimate game of the season.

For Dale Vince it is the culmination of a seven-year dream after becoming the club’s major shareholder in 2010.

He hired experienced manager Mark Cooper at the end of the last campaign and the 47-year-old has achieved what he set out to do by taking Forest Green into the Promised Land.
