The Shutters darts team enjoy playing 'an old-fashioned social game'
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Sunday, 23rd November 2025, 09:00
They may not be hitting 180 every time but the darts team at The Shutters certainly have tons of fun.
They’ve been playing at the village pub in Gotherington for the past 12 years or so, after initially starting just up at the road at the Teddington Hands.
They play in the Winchcombe League and Chris Hawkes, who has been captain for the past 15 years or more, said: “We first started playing in around 2002 or 2003.
“We weren’t very good at the beginning but we’ve got better over the years, it’s good fun.”
And ‘fun’ is the key word for Hawkes.
“We’ve got 10 or 12 players signed on,” he continued. “You need six players for a match but we never have any trouble getting a side.
“I’ve always enjoyed playing a bit of darts, even before we set up a team. It’s an old-fashioned social game, I love everything about it.
“You can have a couple of drinks with your mates and we’ve got a great team. They are all different ages but they’re all committed.”
Hawkes is 51 and at the time of writing, his best checkout score this season is 91.
“I think I’m more of a finisher than a heavy points scorer,” he said. “If I get one 180 a season then I’m happy.
“To be honest, I think I’m a better captain than I am player!”Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
