Dumbleton Cricket Club go marching on. Even by their remarkably high standards, they’ve just had a very good few days.

On Saturday they cemented their place at the top of Premier 2 Glos/Wilts in the West of England Premier League with a 133-run win at Chippenham and the following day they moved into the last four of the Voneus Village Cup with a 42-run win over Cuckney 2nds.

And that win double came on the back of 20-year-old batsman Tom Boorman, one of their star players, making his debut for Gloucestershire on Friday in the T20 Blast against Somerset.

“It’s been a great weekend,” said seam bowler Ross Martin, who played in both games over the weekend. “And our 2nds are top of their league too, they won again at the weekend.”

Their 2nd XI are seven points clear of second-placed Tewkesbury 2nds in Division Two of the Gloucestershire Cricket League after defeating Apperley, with whom they started the day in joint top spot, by four wickets.

The 1st XI, meanwhile, are 21 points ahead of the chasing pack with six games remaining as they chase a place in Premier One for the first time.

“It’s a big aim, the players would love to play in the top tier,” said Martin. “We’ve got such a young side, they all want to do it, we’ve got so much talent.”

The Holland brothers – skipper Myles and Dan – made more than half their side’s 231-8 in their 50 overs on Saturday, sharing a fourth-wicket partnership of 83.

Both made 64 with opener Dan anchoring the innings while Myles’ runs came off 55 balls. Boorman and wicketkeeper Will Sweeting both made 33 before Ollie Horne ripped out Chippenham’s top order to finish with 5-25 in 10 overs.

The ninth-placed team were shot out for 98 in 26.4 overs and Martin said: “Dan Holland has returned to the club this season and he’s the top run scorer in the division.

“It’s awesome having him back, he’s made such a difference.”

Myles, who is 21, has also been in fine form – he made a century yesterday – while Horne has been contributing runs as well as wickets.

“Ollie and I are the leading wicket-takers in the division but Ollie’s scored some big runs for us,” added Martin.

“He hits the ball so cleanly, he works so hard on his game. He scored 70 off 30 balls against Painswick earlier in the season, he’s been a superstar.”

And there are plenty of others who are playing their part, too.

“Will Sweeting is 15 and batting in the top four,” said 29-year-old Martin. “He’s been selected to play in the Bunbury Festival and has already played for Gloucestershire 2s and under-18s.

“Lewis Rollinson is 18 and he’s averaging 50, he’s scored a century in the WEPL.

“Angus Catto is 21. We worked out that the average age of the side on Saturday was 20, there’s so much to be positive about.”

Indeed there is because as well as chasing the league and the Village Cup, the club are also through to the semi-finals of the County Cup and play Bishopston on Sunday.

Martin, a schoolteacher who lives in Gloucester, played previously for Frocester and Painswick before joining Dumbleton four years ago.

“The last few years have been awesome,” he said. “We’ve won promotions, we’ve won cup competitions.

“The thing about this side is that although they’re young, they’ve got experience of winning big cup games and coming with late runs to win leagues, as we did when we won the Gloucestershire Division a couple of years ago.”

Martin was captain in that title-winning success and he was also part of the Village Cup final win at Lord’s in 2022, taking 4-12 as Dumbleton defeated Calmore Sports Club by 86 runs.

Dumbleton were back at Lord’s last year but were beaten by seven wickets by Foxton Granta and Martin says that is something they want to put right.

They must travel to the winners of the quarter-final tie between Stayley and Thornton at the start of next month after booking their place with a relatively comfortable win over Cuckney.

Myles Holland made 101 from 87 balls in his side’s 244-8 in their 40 overs before a good all-round bowling effort saw the visitors dismissed in 37.2 overs.

Boorman, meanwhile, made six for Gloucestershire in the 16-run defeat at Taunton on Friday.

He pulled Craig Overton for six before being caught at cover off the ex-England bowler from the fifth ball he faced and his call-up is rich reward for all the hard work put into the youth set-up at Dumbleton.

“Tommy lives fewer than 200 yards from the ground,” added Martin, who helps coach the women at the club as well as assisting men’s team coach James Cotterill.

“Myles and Dan Holland grew up at the ground, the club have produced so many good cricketers, we've got a fantastic youth section.”
