Tewkesbury pace bowler Tom Morris takes six wickets as Purton dismissed for 37
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 30th June 2025, 13:00
Tewkesbury new-ball bowler Tom Morris ripped through Purton's batting line-up, taking 6-17 as the visitors, chasing 263-6, were shot out for just 37 at Gander Lane on Saturday.
Purton, who have yet to win in the West of England Premier League Premier 2 Glos/Wilts this season, were bundled out in 17 overs with 33-year-old Morris bowling eight overs unchanged.
Four of Morris' victims were bowled, one fell lbw and the other was caught at first clip by Wade Ridsdale, and the medium-fast bowler said: “You’ve got to bowl straight at Tewkesbury, you’ve got to use the conditions. Some balls pop up, others keep a bit low.”
Morris is in his first season with Tewkesbury having played for Gloucester last season. He’s also played for Woodpeckers and Frocester, and he said: “I’ve played against a lot of the lads at Tewkesbury for many years.
“They’re good lads, there’s a good atmosphere at the club, I’ve been made to feel very welcome.”
Tewkesbury didn’t have things all their own way after winning the toss against the bottom-of-the-table side and at one stage were 55-3 before Tom Stevens (70), Ridsdale (49) and an unbeaten 44 from 36 balls by Josh Barnes helped them to an impressive total.
The win lifted Tewkesbury to sixth in the 10-strong division and Morris said: “If we can finish in the top five that would be a massive achievement in our first year in Premier 2.
“Then hopefully we can build on that in the next couple of seasons.”
Tewkesbury were beaten in the second round of the County Cup yesterday, losing by three wickets in the final over to Pak Bristolians after posting 246, but they are through to the T20 WEPL Final and have qualified for the play-offs in the Cheltenham Premier T20.Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
