Stinchcombe Stragglers skipper Laurence Mezo takes eight wickets as Oaksey are dismissed for 36

Seam bowler Laurence Mezo took a career-best 8-18 to set up a quickfire win for Stinchcombe Stragglers over Oaksey.
The home side, who are bottom of Division 7B of the Gloucestershire Cricket League, were shot out for just 36 in 15.4 overs after losing the toss before Stinchcombe knocked off the runs in six overs without losing a wicket.
Seven of Mezo’s eight wickets were caught and remarkably the first five catches were taken at short cover by James Bearman.
“It helped that the pitch had been watered for three days before the game, it was like a pudding,” said 33-yerar-old Mezo, who took over as captain from Bearman two games into this season.
Mezo bowled his in-swing in an eight-over unbroken spell and he continued: “I missed two hat-trick opportunities. I’ve never taken a hat-trick and to be honest, I’d have preferred a hat-trick!”
Midway through the innings he also realised that he wasn’t going to take 10 wickets because Oaksey had only 10 players.
Ethan Montague took the final wicket and Mezo added: “I was pleased, I didn’t want to finish with nine knowing I couldn’t have taken 10!”
Mezo, who joined the club midway through the 2023 season, is the division’s leading wicket-taker with 34 – they’ve come at nine apiece – and he’s delighted with the way the team have performed this season.
They won the Stroud League last season and are currently fifth of 10 with Mezo saying: “If we finish midtable we’ll be well happy.”Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
