Run-machine Cameron Green hoping to get chance to continue Gloucestershire form with Australia at Lord's
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 3rd June 2025, 09:00
Cameron Green is hoping his standout form for Gloucestershire over the past few weeks is enough to earn him a starting place for Australia in next week’s World Test Championship final.
The 26-year-old – it’s his birthday today – scored three centuries and a half-century in a hugely successful five-game county championship spell and would love the opportunity to feature against South Africa at Lord’s on Wednesday 11th June.
Green played his final game for Gloucestershire in the drawn game at Northamptonshire 10 days ago, making 118 in the first innings.
Green’s form was all the more impressive because he had been on the sidelines for a lengthy spell after suffering the fourth back stress fracture of his career.
The all-rounder is not expected to bowl in a match for another two or three months but he is certainly in a good place after his time with Gloucestershire.
“I came over with no expectations,” he said. “I hadn’t played any cricket for eight months. I was just keen to get out there and play a bit of cricket and what happens, happens. I had a clear mind.
“It’s been awesome. I’ve got a lot out of it and hopefully the club have too. The club is a beautiful club, I’ve loved it.”
Green, who was speaking in Cheltenham before linking up with the Australian squad, helped Gloucestershire into fourth spot in the eight-strong Division Two.
They won only the one game but Green was the main man in that three-wicket win over Kent in Bristol, scoring a century in the first innings and an unbeaten half-century in the second innings.
“The cricket is a high standard,” he said. “In Australia, when you get to 50 you feel you can’t get out but here you get to 50 and you can get out any ball.”
Green’s five games were packed into little more than a month – his first game against Kent in Canterbury started on 18th April – and he admitted: “I can’t believe how quick the turnaround is, that took me by surprise and I wasn’t even bowling!”
The highlight of his stay was the win at home to Kent last month.
“It’s always winning a game,” he said. “We had a great game against Kent. The beauty of a club like Gloucestershire is that you see the fans so happy.
“And it’s lovely to be on the right side of the chants in this country!”
Now his focus is very much on Australia and after being part of the team who overcame India in the World Test Championship final two years ago, he’d love to make it a win double.
“It’s going to be a great game,” he said. “Their bowling line-up is incredible, but then so is ours.
“We’ve got experience of winning a World Test Championship so that goes a long way. We’ve had batters come over here and play county championship cricket, that will help us.”Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
