Gloucestershire Gipsies' centenary dinner to take place during Cheltenham Cricket Festival
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Friday, 18th March 2022, 11:30
Gloucestershire Gipsies will be holding their centenary dinner on Friday 22nd July during the Cheltenham FestivalAnyone who knows Chris Coley will know that he is a very busy man.
He is passionate about all sport – especially horseracing and cricket – so he has been particularly busy over the past few days!
But although the horseracing has been all-consuming – he is top trainer Fergal O’Brien’s business partner – that has not prevented him from focusing on other things as well, and he got in touch with The Local Answer to let us know about an important event in the world of cricket that is taking place in Cheltenham in July.
It involves another of his great passions, the Gloucestershire Gipsies, the nomadic cricket team who are celebrating their centenary this year.
Coley is the club’s honorary secretary and he said: “John Barclay, the former Sussex captain and president of the MCC, will be the guest speaker at our centenary dinner in a marquee at the Cheltenham Festival on Friday 22nd July.”
Barclay, now 68, played more than 270 first class games for Sussex from 1970 through to 1986. He was an opening batsman who could also bowl off-spin and he scored close to 10,000 runs in first class cricket and took more than 320 wickets.
Coley has a published a book about the Gloucestershire Gipsies to mark their centenary – Gloucestershire Gipsies 100 Not Out – and he has also written an excellent horseracing quiz book, Under Starter’s Orders, with racing journalist Steve Jones.
