Gloucestershire opening batsman and former captain Chris Dent has retired from professional cricket with immediate effect.

Dent represented the club in 356 matches, amassing over 15,000 runs across all formats. His outstanding tally of 11,237 first-class runs places him 28th on the club’s all-time list, cementing his status as one of Gloucestershire’s finest.

“After 16 memorable seasons playing professional cricket, I’ve decided that the time is right to step away from the game,” the 34-year-old said. “It’s hard to put into words what cricket has given me, but I will always be truly grateful.

“I want to thank Gloucestershire for giving me my opportunity 16 years ago. The support and faith you’ve shown me have been a huge part of any success I’ve had over the years.

“To the fans – your encouragement throughout my career has meant everything. What stands out most, especially over these last few difficult years, is the love and kindness you’ve shown me. That support helped me more than you’ll ever know.

“The biggest thank you goes to all the players. You guys are what made the last 16 years so memorable. I feel incredibly lucky to have shared the field with so many brilliant people.

“When I look back on my career, my favourite memories are special because of the people I shared them with. Even though my time as a cricketer is over, I hope there are still more memories to be made with you all.”

Born in Bristol, Dent joined the club’s pathway at the age of 12, making his senior debut in 2009 during a Pro40 Division One match against Nottinghamshire.

His career highlights include being part of the squad that lifted the 2015 Royal London One Day Cup – Gloucestershire's first major trophy in over a decade.

Dent’s career is marked by countless memorable innings, none more than his highest first-class score of 268 off 347 balls against Glamorgan in September 2015.

That innings is surpassed only by WG Grace, Wally Hammond, Gilbert Jessop and Craig Spearman, and remains the second-highest post-war total for the club behind Spearman’s 341 against Middlesex in 2004.

A model of consistency, Dent passed 1,000 first-class runs in a season on four occasions, most recently in 2019, when he captained the side to promotion to Division One, confirming Gloucestershire’s first top-flight appearance since 2005.

In total, Dent, who has struggled for game-time over the past couple of seasons, captained the side 30 times in first-class cricket, predominantly in the 2018 and 2019 seasons, winning 10 matches, drawing 13, and losing seven.

Gloucestershire head coach Mark Alleyne said: “Reaching the end of a first-class playing career is always a daunting time, but I am sure Denty will look back with brilliant memories of his time with Gloucestershire.

“I remember him in his teenage years, knocking around in the academy, and I am not surprised he became one of our most valued players to come through our pathway.

“Batting at the top for most of his career in England is an unenviable task, but once again he managed to impact games from that position on a regular basis.

“His presence there kept him perennially in England’s shortlist, though he never quite got the call. I believe the international stage could have seen him flourish.

“Although still in great physical shape, it has been more challenging mentally, and on that sad note, his appearances have been somewhat restricted.

“The last few years will not define what has been a stellar career with the Glorious, and I would like to thank him for his immense contributions over the years.

“I feel he may still stay in cricket, perhaps playing locally, and this will be a continued boost for our regional game.

“Well played, Denty, and thank you for your commitment to our club over the years.”

Dent’s first-class average of 36.01 is complemented by significant contributions in white-ball cricket, where he scored over 2,435 List A runs and 1,543 T20 runs for the club. His highest List A score, an unbeaten 151 against Glamorgan in 2013, is one of his five List A centuries, adding to his 21 first-class hundreds.

In T20 cricket, Dent could be an explosive force at the top of the order, averaging 24.1 with a strike rate of 134.05, including a top score of 87 against Worcestershire in 2020, one of his eight half-centuries in the format.

His first century for Gloucestershire – exactly 100 against Surrey in the 2011 County Championship – set the tone for a career that will be remembered fondly by all at the club and its supporters.
