Dumbleton batsman Charlie Garratt excited by Lord's chance in National Village Cup final
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Friday, 13th September 2024, 09:00
Charlie Garratt will play at Lord’s for the first time when Dumbleton take on Foxton Granta in the final of the National Village Cup on Sunday.
The 33-year-old top-order batsman joined the club from Bourton Vale at the start of the season and he is obviously looking forward to stepping out at the home of cricket.
“It’s very exciting,” he told The Local Answer. “It’s very exciting for the club as a whole as well.
“Since getting to Lord’s everybody has been talking about it, it’s excellent. It should be a great day.”
And Dumbleton will be looking for another victory to go with their 86-run win over Calmore Sports in the same competition a couple of years ago.
Ross Martin has taken over as skipper from Rupert Salmon and Garratt is one of several new faces in the team this time around.
“I think it’s about half and half,” he said. “There are quite a few new players, we definitely want to match the achievement of two years ago.
“We want to win it, that is 100 per cent our main focus. Getting to Lord’s is great but winning is the aim.”
And Garratt, who will bat at three on Sunday, has certainly played a big part as Dumbleton have eased into the final.
He is averaging more than 85 in the competition and said: “It’s nice to be able to contribute, I haven’t got many runs in the league.”
Foxton Granta, who play in Division One of the Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire Premier League, will provide a stern challenge, of course.
“We’re expecting a tough game,” continued Garratt. “They’ve had a few tight games which shows they’ve got a bit about them to get over the line.”
Both clubs are travelling down to London on Saturday, although Foxton Granta won’t be heading to the capital until they’ve played their final league game at Cambridge St Giles.
They also had a league game last Saturday whereas Dumbleton won’t have played for just over two weeks when the teams meet at Lord’s.
“We’ve had additional training sessions and we’ll have a light session before we go to London,” said Garratt.
“It’s been a long season and we’ve played a lot of cricket, it’s quite nice to have a few days off.”
Garratt, who lives in Evesham, certainly won’t be short of support on the big day because his dad Pete, brother George and partner Rose Freeman will all be cheering him on.
And a number of his former team-mates from Bourton Vale will also be there too.
There will also be plenty of support from Dumbleton.
“We’ve got three supporters’ coaches going to London,” said Garrett.
“The club and the village have been so supportive, we’ve had great support for all our away games.”
Foxton Granta opening batsman Adam Webster said that the majority and possibly all of their players playing on Saturday will play at Lord’s.
The 33-year-old was captain when Foxton were runners-up in the National Village Cup in 2015.
“I’m the only player from that team playing on Sunday,” he said.
Foxton merged with Cambridge Granta three years ago.
Sunday’s final is a 40-overs red-ball game.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
