It was the greatest day in Dumbleton’s long and proud history.

They played at Lord’s and won at Lord’s – not too many teams up and down the country can claim that – and even fewer can have produced the kind of all-round performance that saw them win the National Village Cup.

And beating Calmore Sports Club by 85 runs in such emphatic fashion on Sunday was all the more impressive because the Hampshire club had themselves won the trophy the previous season.

“It was a dream come true,” said experienced all-rounder Adam Stuart. “It was a once in a lifetime opportunity, it was a great all-round performance, everyone played their part.”

About the only thing that went wrong for Dumbleton was when skipper Rupert Salmon lost the toss, but they soon turned that negative into a positive as they posted an imposing 241 for four from their 40 overs.

Salmon played a captain’s innings with an unbeaten 73 from 67 balls, Tom Boorman made 71 from 72 balls, including three sixes, while Myles Holland hit two maximums in his quickfire 39 from 34 balls.

Then the bowlers took over with Ross Martin leading the charge by taking the first four Calmore wickets. He claimed four for 12 from eight overs with his right-arm seam as Calmore were reduced to 34 for four.

That soon became 39 for five and realistically there was no way back from there. They were eventually dismissed in 39.1 overs.

“Ross is a very good bowler, he just moves it around,” said Stuart, who also chipped in with two wickets towards the end.

Dumbleton’s bowling performance made the team’s batting display earlier in the day even more special, of course, and while Salmon and Boorman scored the bulk of the runs, the openers played their part too.

“We were 22 for one after 10 overs but the openers Dan Holland and Ross Martin played really well,” said Craig Baldwin, who was in Dumbleton’s 14-man squad but just missed out on a place in the final XI. “The ball was really swinging around, it hooped about all day, they were excellent.”

As were the whole team because although Martin was obviously the standout bowler, Jamie Diamond chipped in with two wickets and there was one apiece for Ollie Horne and Will Sharp.

“It was fantastic day, it was a true team effort,” added Baldwin.
