Angus Catto is the hero as title-chasing Dumbleton beat Tewkesbury by two runs
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 26th August 2025, 11:00
Angus Catto took two wickets in two balls to clinch an astonishing two-run win for Dumbleton at Tewkesbury on Saturday.
Chasing the visitors’ all out 183, Tewkesbury looked set to claim victory when the pace bowler began the 49th of the permitted 50 overs.
The experienced Wade Ridsdale, who had earlier taken 6-24, was unbeaten on 18 from 22 balls and Tewkesbury were just a boundary away from earning their seventh win of the season in Premier 2 Glos/Wilts of the West of England Premier League.
But Catto had other ideas. His first delivery to Ridsdale was a dot ball and the all-rounder was restricted to just a single off the next delivery.
That left Matt Stevens on strike and Catto showed he was the man for the occasion as he pinned him lbw first ball.
One delivery later it was all over as Tom Morris fell in exactly the same way to spark title-chasing Dumbleton's celebrations.
“It was a great finish but I still can’t believe it to be honest,” said captain Myles Holland. “We were behind for a lot of the game.
“But we still thought we had a slight chance. We kept taking wickets at big moments, although the longer the game went on the more it was going in their favour.”
One of those big moments came from the final ball of the 48th over when Ollie Horne bowled Archie Freeth to leave Tewkesbury 180-8.
“As soon as Ollie took that wicket, we thought we had a chance,” continued Holland. “We always thought it was possible.”
Horne finished with 2-42 while fellow new-ball bowler Ross Martin picked up 3-39 and Dan Hammond claimed 3-22.
Catto, who was the fourth bowler used by Holland, had been wicketless in his first nine overs which had cost 35 runs.
“I just told him to bowl fast and straight,” said 21-year-old Holland.
“I don’t think he could believe it, he’s still pretty young. He’s at university in Durham and has played for us in the second half of the season, he’s had such a good impact.”
Earlier, Holland’s brother Dan had made the biggest impact with the bat, opening the innings and making 53 after Dumbleton had won the toss.
Seven other batsmen reached double figures but none went past 21 and Myles Holland said: “It was a tricky pitch, it turned a lot and didn’t bounce very much.
“We knew it wasn’t going to be a high-scoring game, we just needed someone to get a score.”
Tewkesbury also found run-scoring difficult despite Josh Barnes’ quickfire 45 at the top of the innings while Louis Whitmore and Henry Snow made 37 and 41 respectively.
Dumbleton’s win ensures they go into the final game of the league campaign at home to third-placed Wootton Bassett on top of the table and closing in on a place in Premier One for the first time in their history.
They hold an 11-point advantage over Goatacre, who host Hatherley and Reddings, and Holland said: “For a club from a small village like ours to play in Premier One would be a big achievement.
“The division we're in is very competitive and anyone can beat anyone, but we’re confident.”
Tewkesbury, who are eighth in the 10-strong division but well clear of relegation trouble, travel to Purton on Saturday.Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
