Young all-rounder Will Naish leads the way at Bunbury Festival

Will Naish was one of the star turns at this year’s prestigious Bunbury Festival.
The Frocester and and Gloucestershire Under-15 all-rounder played a leading role, captaining the South West to victory in both the 50-over and T20 competitions.
Naish was the fifth highest runscorer with 171 runs at an average of 57 and a strike rate of 113. This included 84 off just 68 balls to lead his team to a nine-wicket win over London and the East.
Naish was joined in the South West team by county team-mate Hamdi Saleem. The Downend fast bowler Hamdi took 3-37 against London and the East and finished the tournament as the joint third highest wicket-taker with six at an average of just 17.
Gloucestershire’s head of talent pathway Tim Hancock said: “Both Will and Hamdi had a good week.
“Will justified the decision to make him captain by leading the side well across the week. He has continued to improve as a cricketer this year.
“Since coming back from injury he has played some key innings for the Gloucestershire Under 17s and his bowling is back up where we know it can be.
“Hamdi had crept up on the rails in the selection process and really impressed everybody with his pace, consistency and desire to bowl quick.
“In Gloucestershire we have known this for a while and seen him do it on a game by game basis but it was really nice for him to show others on a bigger stage.
“It was a great effort for the South West to win both competitions and great to see two Gloucestershire lads playing a big part. They are two very impressive young cricketers.”
Meanwhile, three Gloucestershire players are currently taking part in the ECB’s Under 17 Super 4s regional competition at Loughborough.
Bristol CC wicketkeeper Matt Brewer and Gloucestershire Academy pair Ollie Price (Great and Little Tew) and Ben Charlesworth (Oxford) are all in the south and west squad for the tournament which seeks to get the best under 17 players in the country going head-to-head.
The players will compete in both 50-over and T20 cricket with the hope of impressing selectors for the England Under-19s.
It is the second year in a row Gloucestershire have been well-represented at the Super 4s with Ollie’s elder brother Tom among four players who took part in 2017.
Tim Hancock said: “It is nice to see three lads in there. Ben Charlesworth did well when he was called up by England Under-19s recently and I am sure he will make the most of the opportunity to show what he can do at this level.
“Ollie has developed into a really consistent cricketer. He has captained the under-17s, averages 45 opening the batting – including a best of 133 not out – and is the top wicket-taker in the country with his off-spin.Copyright © 2024 The Local Answer Limited.
