Records were sent flying as Jamie Lait smashed a fantastic unbeaten 259 for Chedworth in Division Six of the Bank House Gloucestershire County League.

Jamie, who is in his first season as captain of his village club, hit 27 fours and a remarkable 17 sixes on his way to the highest individual score by anyone anywhere in the county so far this summer.

The opener’s chanceless innings improved his previous best – and club record score – of 159 set in 2015 and totally dominated Chedworth’s 45-over total of 360-4 with Aditya Saha the next highest run maker on 35.

Opponents Hatherley and Reddings 3rds, not surprisingly, then wilted in reply to 99 all out, John Watson capturing 5-27 to wrap up a 261-run triumph as Chedworth moved up to fourth in the table.

Jamie, aged 25, said: “It was a day you dream of. Looking back, I’m not even sure how it all happened!”

The afternoon began well when the right-hander won the toss. He added: “I think I had lost four in a row so it was good to be able to bat first.

“The two opening bowlers bowled tight spells and I didn’t take any chances at the start. I was just shy of my 100 when we stopped for drinks after 22 overs, and after that I decided to kick on.”

Jamie, who is in his 10th season with the club, made the most of home knowledge as he took advantage of shorter straight boundaries to plunder the majority of his sixes, losing at least three balls in the process.

He said: “It was one of those days when I kept managing to find the gaps.

“I have to thank our groundsman Alistair Lockey who does such a great job on the wicket, there’s been a lot of runs at our place this year.

“And the Hatherley lads were also very good, congratulating me when we went off at tea.”
