Resolutions for pet owners

New Year’s resolutions are an opportunity to set goals or ambitions for the upcoming year. That usually means giving up something like alcohol or chocolate, or taking on a fitness challenge. Why not make some pet-focused resolutions instead this year? Here are some suggestions to help keep Fido and Felix happy.

Exercise: Dogs and cats need stimulation, both physical and mental. Take your dog on a new walk or to a different area – new smells and locations will be very exciting compared to the same old trudge around the local park. Cats love activities too – catnip toys, crinkly balls and even cardboard boxes are great entertainment. Interact with your cat more, don’t just live in the same space together!

Feeding: Are you feeding your pet the best cat or dog food? Are you measuring out the correct amount or just guessing? Is it time to move onto a senior food, or one with some extra joint or skin supplements? If you appreciate your own nutrition make sure you aren’t short-changing your pets!

Treats: Don’t forget, all those ‘Dreamies’ and ‘Schmackos’ have extra calories. If weight is an issue for your pet, try cutting back or looking for healthier options like carrot sticks for dogs.

Health: Have you been ignoring that skin lump or fetid dog breath? Is old age starting to catch up with your furry one? Don’t be afraid to seek some veterinary advice. Book in a health check if required, make sure vaccinations are up to date, and stay on top of the basics like flea and worm control.

Microchips: Dogs should all be microchipped by law, but don’t forget to get your cats done too. It’s quick, cheap and potentially lifesaving if they get taken to a vet clinic in an emergency by a good Samaritan. And remember, there’s no point in having your pet microchipped if all your contact details are out of date.

Don’t feel limited by my suggestions – use your imagination and think of all the joy your pet gives you. Maybe it’s time you both took up running again, or you commit to some regular ‘play time’ with Felix, not just the occasional ‘feed and fuss’. Happy New Year and enjoy spending it with your furry, four-legged friend.
